Jay-Z once painted an image of his younger self making corrupt decisions by rapping the line “Hov did that, so hopefully you won’t have to go through that.” In this verse, Hov urges his listeners against the lifestyle he once lived selling crack on the streets. This line popped into my head last December while stuffing my face full of Brazilian meats and sides at an alarming, and frankly overwhelming rate at Fogo de Chao. With my meat sweats trickling and my mouth full I told my significant other that this place should be banned. Yet, I immediately resented my own arrogance. Who am I to spend 50 bucks at a place then say it shouldn’t be experienced by others? But in my defense, like Jay, I did it so you won’t have to. Continue Reading →

Combinatorics is a branch of mathematics involved in the study of the properties of discrete structures.  For example, this video explores this combinatorial problem: how many unique paths can get you from one corner of an N x N square grid to the other without doubling back? It might seem like a simple problem, but as this video shows, the complexity grows shockingly quickly.   Continue Reading →

Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier takes us back with this killer Janet Jackson demo

Greg Saunier, drummer of prog pop noise outfit Deerhoof, brings us this tasty rendition of Janet Jackson’s, “What Have You Done for me Lately”. It is full of gritty synth lines, polyrhythmic drumming, and even Saunier laying down some vocals. According to the band, this song eventually morphed into Deerhoof’s, “Paradise Girls,” which you can listen to below. Deerhoof are set to play Monday, March 23 at the Earl, and you can purchase tickets here.

Groeni Releases New EP “Hewn”

New music from Wellington, New Zealand, by producer Alexander Green who goes by the alias Groeni.  He has a future garage / downtempo sound, akin to James Blake.  He uses clean, well produced drum programming, mixed with synths and field recording re-sampled through tape machines and effected layered vocals.  It has a dark psychedelic pop atmosphere.  It is his sophomore release with Berlin label Project Mooncircle, who houses Robot Koch and Submerse.  You can check out more of his sounds on his soundcloud.
